基隆市立醫院 Keelung Municipal Hospital

The address of Keelung Municipal Hospital is No.282, Dongxin Rd., Xinyi Dist., Keelung City 201. It occupies an area of around 9,720 m2. With an eye to quarantining patients who had contagious disease due to outbreak of plague, Keelung Municipal Hospital, being able to accommodate 150 patients including those infected and carriers, was founded in Mar. 1899. And its original name was Gangdong Quarantine Hospital. And it, in fact, reduced to ashes when suffering from bombards during WWII and sweeps of typhoon in Sep. 1947.

In Jan. 1949, this hospital was renamed as Keelung Contagion Hospital. And later in Jul., a new inaugural mayor HSIEH, KUAN-YI, gave funding to it for further renovation. In Jan. 1950, Keelung Contagion Hospital was officially renamed as Keelung Municipal Hospital, which provided 50 sickbeds. At that time, there were Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Surgery, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Department of Otolaryngology, Department of Dermatology, Department of Laboratory Medicine, and X-Ray Room. In 1951, 1963, and 1965, three buildings with 36 sickbeds were respectively built. On Oct. 25 1968, the 2nd floor of Main Medical Building was renovated. In 1975, Main Medical Building was extended into a 3-floor one, which provided 200 sickbeds. In 1980, Emergency Building was built. However after 1980, wards gradually got older and private large hospitals came up as competitors; thus, the number of wards in Keelung Municipal Hospital reduced to 35 and emergency services stopped. Finally, old wards, which occupied around 3,240 m2, were rebuilt into Handicapped General Service Center under Keelung City Municipal Administration’s command.

Since 1987, Keelung Municipal Hospital has cooperated with many educational hospitals so as to improve medical quality and to create the most professional medical team. A long-term cooperative relationship with National Taiwan Uni. Hospital, Cathay General Hospital, and Taipei City Hospital is currently in progress. Moreover, Keelung Municipal Hospital was first evaluated as a regional general hospital by Department of Health, Executive Yuan; namely, we integrated both of two community hospital’s operational models concerning public health and clinic medicine. We undertake big health check commissioned by the government, such as health check for the elderly, for women above 40, for the disabled, and for the students of junior high and elementary schools. Besides, there are Department of Internal Medicine, Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, Ophthalmology, Dentistry, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Otolaryngology in our hospital to serve people. Recently, to meet people’s needs, nursing home, home care, day nursing center, respiratory care wards, and dementia care center are launched.
